TikTok is full of life hacks, but not all of them are as helpful as they seem — especially when it comes to Invisalign® treatment. While some tricks can make life with clear aligners easier, others can actually slow down your treatment or even damage your aligners.
If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok — who hasn’t? — chances are you’ve come across Invisalign hacks that claim to speed up results and make the treatment process a little easier. But are they safe? And do they actually work?
At GO Orthodontics, we’re here to set the record straight. Let’s take a closer look at the best—and worst—TikTok Invisalign hacks, so you know which ones to try and which ones to avoid.
The Best Invisalign Hacks (What to Try & Why)
Not all TikTok hacks are bad! In fact, some can actually make your Invisalign experience more comfortable and convenient—as long as they’re safe and orthodontist-approved.
While these tips won’t magically speed up your treatment, they can help reduce discomfort, improve oral hygiene, and make aligners easier to wear.
Your experienced orthodontists and Diamond Plus Invisalign providers, Dr. Gililland, Dr. O’Bannon, Dr. Gonder and Dr. Radford, are here to help you achieve your stunning new smile with expert guidance! You’re in good hands here.
Now, let’s look at some of the best Invisalign hacks that actually work:
GOOD Invisalign Hack #1: Switch to new aligners at night
As you likely already know, switching to a new set of aligners from your current set can cause mild soreness as your teeth adjust. If you change aligners right before bed, you’ll sleep through the initial soreness and wake up with your teeth already adapting to the new trays. This trick can make the transition smoother and reduce discomfort during the day!
GOOD Invisalign Hack #2: Use a water flosser instead of string floss
Oral hygiene is extra important during orthodontic treatment, since food particles and bacteria can get trapped between your teeth – and your clear aligners add another layer to the mix.
A water flosser (also called an oral irrigator) can be a game-changer — it blasts away food and plaque from between teeth more effectively than traditional floss, especially if you have tight spaces. This is backed by a number of studies that found water flossers to be “more effective in removing plaque from inaccessible interproximal areas of the tooth surfaces as compared to dental floss.”
Many Invisalign users find water flossers easier and faster to use than string floss. If you want to keep your teeth and aligners fresh, consider adding a water flosser to your routine!
GOOD Invisalign Hack #3: Use a nail file to file down rough edges (gently!)
Occasionally, the edges of new aligners can rub against your gums a bit. If this happens, you can lightly smooth out the edges with a nail file or a clean, fine-grit emery board.
Important: Only file the edges VERY gently — never reshape or thin out the aligners. Over-filing can compromise the fit and reduce their effectiveness. If your aligners are too uncomfortable, always check in with your orthodontist first.
GOOD Invisalign Hack #4: Rinse your aligners with room temperature water before placing them.
Inserting aligners straight from the case can feel a bit tight — this is normal and necessary, since they need enough pressure to gently guide your teeth into alignment. But here’s a great Invisalign hack: Give your aligners a quick rinse with room temperature or cool water to make them a little more moldable and easier to slide into place.
The warmth of lukewarm/room temperature water is similar to the warmth of your mouth — that’s why your aligners will inevitably loosen up once you place them. This hack just makes the initial placement a bit easier!
But it’s VERY IMPORTANT that you avoid hot water! High temperatures can warp your aligners, changing their shape and reducing their intended effectiveness. Always stick to lukewarm or cool water when rinsing or cleaning your trays.
The Worst Invisalign Hacks (What NOT to Try & Why)
Now.. drum roll, please…. Let’s dive into the worst Invisalign Tik Tok hacks that you should never try!
While some of these “hacks” may seem harmless, they can interfere with proper tooth movement and compromise your results, damage your aligners or even damage your smile. (Remember the awful Tide Pod “challenge”? Needless to say, not every viral idea is a good one!)
The best approach? Stick to your orthodontist’s instructions and avoid taking shortcuts that could backfire.
Here are some of the worst Invisalign hacks that you should never try:
BAD Invisalign Hack #1: Soaking aligners in mouthwash
It might seem like a quick and easy way to disinfect your trays, but many mouthwashes contain alcohol, dyes and harsh ingredients that can weaken Invisalign trays, stain them, and make them brittle over time. Mouthwash is not designed to clean your Invisalign trays.
Better alternative: Use Invisalign™ Cleaning Crystals made specifically for Invisalign, or use a mild, clear antibacterial soap to keep your aligners clean and odor-free. Avoid using denture cleaners, as these can damage your aligners’ surfaces too.
BAD Invisalign Hack #2: Filling trays with whitening gel
If you’re looking to brighten your smile, filling Invisalign trays with whitening gel might sound like a great idea, but steer clear! Whitening gels are not designed for Invisalign trays; they can damage and weaken your aligners, irritate gums, cause sensitivity in your mouth, and lead to uneven whitening and discoloration.
Better alternative: You can actually whiten your teeth during Invisalign treatment, just not with your Invisalign aligners! Simply take your aligners out to complete a whitening treatment, then rinse your mouth, rinse your aligners, and pop them back in to continue your transformation. Only use whitening trays that are provided with your whitening treatment — not your aligners.
BAD Invisalign Hack #3: Boiling aligners to tighten them
Yikes! Some TikTok videos suggest boiling Invisalign trays to “reshape” or “tighten” them — but this is one of the worst things you can do.
What happens if you boil your Invisalign aligners? Hot water warps plastic, ruins the custom fit, and can make your aligners completely unusable. Even slight distortion can cause your aligners to stop working properly, delaying your treatment and requiring you to get replacement aligners. After all of the hard work you’ve put into your transformation, don’t ruin it by destroying your aligners and messing up your treatment plan.
Better alternative: If your aligners feel loose or don’t fit correctly, keep wearing them as prescribed and please reach out to us as soon as possible so we can assess the fit!

BAD Invisalign Hack #4: Using rubber bands from home to close gaps faster
Some TikTokers suggest using household rubber bands to speed up tooth movement — but this DIY hack is extremely dangerous.
These makeshift rubber bands aren’t designed for orthodontic use and can dig into your gums, cut off blood circulation to your teeth, and even cause tooth loss. Trying to force your teeth into alignment can result in permanent damage to your gums and bone structure.
Better alternative: Trust your personalized treatment plan designed by your orthodontist. Trying these DIY hacks will only slow down your treatment plan, and could cause serious damage to your smile.
Common Invisalign Mistakes to Avoid
Even with the best intentions, Invisalign wearers can make small mistakes that slow down treatment, cause discomfort, or affect your results. Invisalign is designed to be convenient, but neglecting your orthodontist’s guidelines can lead to delays.
Here are some of the most common Invisalign mistakes — along with easy fixes to help you stay on track and get the best results.
Mistake 1: Not Wearing Aligners for 20-22 Hours a Day
One of the biggest mistakes Invisalign patients make is not wearing their aligners long enough. For Invisalign to work effectively, aligners must be worn for at least 20-22 hours per day. Taking them out too often—or for extended periods—can slow down progress, shift teeth incorrectly, and prolong your treatment.
Stick to the “eat, brush, wear” routine—only remove aligners when eating, drinking (anything besides water), or brushing and flossing. Use reminders or phone alarms to keep you on track!
Mistake 2: Failing to Clean Aligners Properly
Many patients think a quick rinse with water is enough to clean aligners, but they need a bit more! Invisalign trays accumulate bacteria, plaque, and odors, just like your teeth do. If not cleaned properly, they can turn cloudy, develop an odor, or even cause bad breath.
What is the best way to clean your Invisalign aligners?
Every time you clean your teeth, clean your aligners. That’s at at least twice a day! You can use a mild, clear antibacterial soap. It’s a good idea to carry around a small travel toothbrush, and give your aligners a quick rinse and brushing each time you take them out to eat or drink. This will help prevent plaque buildup.
Avoid using colored mouthwashes, whitening toothpaste, or harsh chemicals, because they can weaken or stain your trays — as you know!
Pro Tip: Always store aligners in your clean Invisalign case when not in use to keep them clean, protected, and free from bacteria.
Mistake 3. Losing Aligners by Wrapping Them in Napkins
It’s tempting to wrap aligners in a napkin during meals—but this is one of the most common ways people accidentally throw them away! Napkins get mistaken for trash, and before you know it, your aligners are gone for good.
Always carry your Invisalign case with you. It keeps your aligners clean, safe, and protected when you’re not wearing them. If you lose your aligners, contact your orthodontist immediately to avoid treatment delays.
Mistake 4. Skipping Aligner Changes or Trying to Speed Up Treatment
Some Invisalign patients forget to switch aligners on schedule, while others try to move on to the next set early to speed up treatment. Both of these mistakes can negatively impact your progress, cause discomfort, or shift teeth incorrectly.
Follow your orthodontist’s treatment schedule exactly. If an aligner feels loose or too tight, don’t skip ahead — talk to your orthodontist first. Rushing treatment can cause setbacks, so it’s always best to follow the plan for a smooth, successful smile transformation!
Stick to the plan, stan!
